Innovative Treatment Solutions for PFAS
Since 2015, eMinus LLC has been researching and developing innovative solutions for PFAS contamination in soil, water, and groundwater. These efforts resulted in an in-situ remediation technology: D-FAS. This patented technology (U.S. 10,752,521) exploits the physical properties of PFAS to partition from water and accumulate at air/water interfaces. This creates a concentrated PFAS foam which is removed from the subsurface, condensed, and treated on or off-site. The D-FAS platform includes foam fractionation, redox/geochemical manipulation, groundwater recirculation, VOC removal, bioremediation enhancement, and ISCO for precursor conversion.
D-FAS was successfully demonstrated and evaluated under ESTCP DEM/VAL project ER-19-5075. This project showed that D-FAS is capable of removing high levels of PFAS mass from AFFF source areas. It is also effective in removing PFAS mass from down-gradient areas. A total of 107 g of total PFAS was removed from the site after 3 months of operations using two treatment wells. This total included 47 g of PFOS which compares favorably to the initial PFOS mass of 54 g as measured by groundwater and soil samples.
